May 28th – Zambian Family Dinner

We got up around 8am and ate breakfast.  I had CoCo puffs that I bought at the ShopRite here in town.  Then, I read a little bit.  Eventually, I met up with John and Ruth at the lab.  I went out with them as Ruth did a weed count and showed me her casava plots.  We came back to the house for lunch.  After lunch, we went back to the lab.  John and I talked about some remote sensing stuff and just hung out.

In the evening, I helped John do the laundry.  I also took a shower.

Around 6:30pm, we went to the Martin and Mary Chiona’s for dinner with their family.  We were joined by Martin’s brother Winfred and their children, Earnest and Mercy.  We went over about an hour before dinner and just talked with them.  It turns out the Chiona’s lived in Florida for a few years back in the early 90’s while Mr. Chiona got his masters degree.

Dinner began with a prayer.  Then, Mr. Chiona brought out a pitcher full of a water, a bar of soap, and a bowl.  We each took turns washing our hands while Mr. Chiona poured the water over our them.  Mrs. Chiona prepared the dishes for us which included sheema, cavasa leaves, beans, some kind of potato root meatloaf, and macaroni with ground beef.  The food was excellent!  I had two plate-fulls of it.  For dessert, we had no back cookies (which Ruth made) and lemon cake.  These also were delicious! After we finished eating, we watch some British TV and talked some more.  We went home around 9:15pm.

We relaxed the rest of the evening.
